The amazing facts of the world
The amazing facts of the world
The Belize Barrier Reef (BBR) is the second largest barrier reef in the world, after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, which is considered the largest. But why is the Belize Barrier Reef an amazing underwater world? We will dive into this article.
We must first know that the Belize Barrier Reef is one of the seven underwater wonders*.
The Belize Barrier Reef stretches over 186 miles or about 300 kilometers. This reef is part of the more extensive Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system, which stretches over 560 miles from Cancun to Honduras.
This water world is lovely and a vast area full of biological and plant diversity.
Many rare and endangered animal species, such as the American crocodile, are also within this barrier. Similarly, this region has the largest population of West Indian manatees in the world.
Other animals in the area include sea turtles, red-legged boobies and a variety of seabirds, and more than 500 species of fish.
The Belize Barrier Reef is also home to 65 species of stony corals and 350 species of mollusks. There are about 178 types of plants on the islands of this region, i.e., above water, and 247 types of marine plants under the sea.
Various turtles and manatee seagrasses are also found here.
But despite this, it is said that about 90% of the coral species in the ocean have not yet been discovered by the human community, which is a downside of modern science.
Anyway, the coasts of the Belize Barrier Reef are a popular area for scuba divers from around the world.
The beautiful coral reef represents the excellent natural environment underwater, which has gained fame as the well-managed home of the world’s most diverse ecosystems.
It is said that the BBR can also be easily identified from space. Before this, China’s Great Wall and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef were mentioned as objects that the naked eye from space can see.
One of the main features of this area is the Belize Blue Hole, a natural sinkhole with immense depth, which is considered the world famous well.
Much research has been performed on the Belize Blue Hole; many divers have approached this magic water hole. Still, many of the inner secrets of this sinkhole are to be revealed.
BBR Marine Park is also famous for its vast biological diversity. It has provided a habitat for hundreds of species of coral, fish, and other aquatic life.
For all these reasons, The Belize Barrier Reef has become one of the seven underwater wonders of the world.
Lastly, it is the responsibility of the present human community to protect and hand over to future generations at its natural stage.
*The Seven Underwater Wonders of the World was announced by CEDAM International (Conservation, Education, Diving, Awareness, and Marine Research), a non-profit organization of divers. This organization is dedicated to marine research and conservation. CEDAM began the Seven Underwater Wonders investigation program in 1989.
It is said that the primary goal of creating a list of underwater wonder locations is to protect them before they are lost forever.
